Causes of High Fire Danger

Several factors contribute to high fire danger in Southern California, including:

  • **Dry, warm Santa Ana winds:** These winds blow westward toward the coast, bringing dry air that can fan wildfires.
  • **Lack of rain, dry vegetation:** When there is little rain, vegetation turns brown and dry, providing fuel for wildfires.
  • **Electrical equipment concerns:** Power companies may shut off power in areas with high fire danger to prevent electrical equipment from sparking fires.

Wildfire Evacuation Preparedness

It is important to be prepared for a wildfire evacuation. Keep a “Go Bag” with essential supplies, including:

  • A 3-day supply of non-perishable food and 3 gallons of water per person
  • A map with at least 2 evacuation routes
  • Necessary prescriptions or medications
  • A change of clothes and extra eyeglasses/contact lenses
  • Extra car keys, credit cards, cash, or traveler’s checks
  • A first aid kit and sanitation supplies
  • A flashlight and battery-powered radio with extra batteries
  • Copies of important documents (birth certificates, passports, etc.)
  • Pet food and water
