Lions Lose Amik Robertson to Broken Humerus
The Detroit Lions’ injury woes continue to mount as they lost another key player, Amik Robertson, to a broken humerus during Sunday’s divisional round playoff game against the Washington Commanders. The injury is a significant blow to Detroit’s already thin cornerback depth chart.
Robertson’s Injury
Robertson suffered the injury in the second quarter of the game while attempting to tackle Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin. Teammate Jack Campbell came in to finish the play and caught Robertson’s arm with his shoulder, forcing them to the ground and injuring Robertson’s arm in the process. According to NFL Media, Robertson underwent surgery Saturday night to repair the broken bone.
Robertson had played well for the Lions this season, starting four games and making eight passes defensed. He was coming off a strong performance against the Minnesota Vikings in the wild-card round, where he helped limit star wide receiver Justin Jefferson to just three catches for 27 yards.
Lions’ Thin Cornerback Depth
With Robertson out, the Lions are now down to just five healthy cornerbacks on their active roster: Terrion Arnold, Brian Branch, Kindle Vildor, Stantley Thomas-Oliver, and Morice Norris. Vildor replaced Robertson in the game against the Commanders, and he could be in line for a starting role moving forward.
The Lions’ lack of depth at cornerback is a concern, especially with the NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers looming next week. The 49ers have a talented passing attack led by quarterback Brock Purdy, and they will be looking to exploit any weaknesses in Detroit’s secondary.
What’s Next for Robertson?
Robertson is expected to be ready for offseason workouts, which means he should be back on the field for the start of the 2023 season. The Lions will be hoping that he can continue to play at a high level and help them improve their defense.
For now, the Lions will have to rely on their remaining cornerbacks to step up and fill the void left by Robertson’s injury. They will need to play well if they want to have a chance of beating the 49ers and advancing to the Super Bowl.
