Bobby Slowik Departs As Texans Offensive Coordinator After Tumultuous Season
The Houston Texans have parted ways with offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik and offensive line coach Chris Strausser, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday. The move comes after a disappointing 2024 season that saw the Texans regress offensively trotz adding several high-profile players.
A Promising Debut Season
Slowik’s tenure in Houston began with a promising debut season in 2023. He directed C.J. Stroud to an impressive rookie campaign that culminated in a division title, a home playoff win, and the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. With Slowik calling the shots, the Texans boasted a top-12 offense and the seventh-ranked passing offense in the league, propelling them to an unexpected turnaround season.
Offensive Struggles in 2024
However, the Texans’ offense took a significant step back in 2024. The offensive line struggled mightily, hindering Stroud’s development and leading to a league-high 52 sacks. Stroud’s performance suffered as a result, with his completion percentage, passing yards, passing touchdowns, and passer rating all declining. The Texans also saw a significant increase in turnovers, with Stroud throwing 12 interceptions after just five in 2023.
Inconsistency and Scheme Issues
The Texans’ offensive struggles were compounded by a lack of consistency and questionable scheme decisions. Despite adding Stefon Diggs and Joe Mixon in the offseason, the unit failed to live up to expectations. Injuries to Diggs and Nico Collins , as well as the season-ending knee injury to Tank Dell , certainly did not help matters.
Moving Forward
The Texans’ decision to part ways with Slowik and Strausser is a clear sign that they are not satisfied with the team’s offensive performance in 2024. The hiring of a new offensive coordinator and offensive line coach will be crucial to their long-term success. The Texans will need to find a way to improve their pass protection and overall offensive consistency if they want to contend in 2025 and beyond.
